There are mainly three ways you can install a WordPress plugin; by search, by upload, and by FTP.

And today I will show you all three step by step.

Let’s start it…

1. Install a WordPress plugin from the dashboard by searching it:

Step 1: log in to your WordPress dashboard.

Step 2: Go to > Plugins > Add new

You can either navigate to it from the side menu or from inside the plugins page. It will open up the page where you can see a list of plugins available with WP.

There are 50,650 plugins available with WordPress as of today (15th June 2017). It’s easy to get lost when there’s a plugin for literally anything you can imagine to do on your blog.

So, just stay focused and stick to what you had planned, search the plugin you were looking for.

If you are not sure which plugin you should use, then, here’s my list of the must-have plugins for any blog.

Go ahead and check out the list and if any of the plugins match your requirement, then, you can surely opt-in for the one I have listed, as the list was made after extensive experimentation on more than ten websites. I have only listed the best as per my opinion.

If you like, you can also test all the available plugins for yourself and pick the best ones as per you. Just make sure you don’t do it on your primary domain as you might screw up the whole website if you are not adept with coding or if you’re not from a technical background. So, either buy a secondary domain or create a sub-domain on the main domain and do all your testing as you like.

Step 3: Type in the name of the plugin or a keyword related to the plugin in the search box.

It will show the most relevant plugins based on your search terms.

Step 4: Pick the one you want to install and click on the “Install Now” button next to it.

Now it will turn into a blue coloured button written as “activate”; which means the plugin successfully is installed.

Step 5: Now, you can either click on the blue button available here to activate the plugin or you can go back to the installed plugins page and find the plugin you’ve just installed and “activate” it from there.

Step 6: All set! Now you can start configuring the plugin as you want.

Note: After the installation, the plugin should show up in the side menu of the dashboard. If it is not showing there, check if it is under plugins menu, under tools, under appearance, media or the settings menu.

Look for a name that is similar to the name of the newly installed plugin. For example, Yoast SEO will show up as just “SEO”, WP Facebook Messenger will show up as only “Facebook Messenger”.

And sometimes, some plugins for custom fonts or some shortcode plugins might not even show up anywhere in the side menu, these usually show up when you add a new post or edit one.

And some plugin might not show up anywhere at all, for example, Hellobar; the plugin is simply used to connect your blog to the Hellobar dashboard outside of your blog.

Second option to install a plugin is via upload.

2. Install a WordPress plugin by uploading it to the dashboard:

If you are using a third-party plugin, especially when you buy a premium plugin, you won’t be able to search and install it from the dashboard.

So, for such cases, you will have to use either the upload option available with WordPress or via FTP.

Here’s how to install a plugin by upload…

Step 1: Navigate to the plugins menu and click on “Add New”.

Step 2: This time instead of searching for the plugin, click on the “upload plugin” button available on the left-top next to Add Plugins.

Step 3: A new section will appear above the available plugins. Click on “Choose file”.

It will pop out a new window from where you can navigate to the plugin folder in your computer and select the .zip folder of the plugin.

Note: if it shows any similar error like “” then it simply means that you have chosen a wrong zip file.

Often time what happens, when you buy a plugin or download a plugin from outside of WordPress, the package comes zipped with its license documents. So, you will have to extract the zip file first and then you will have a new zip file inside the extracted folder. Upload that one.

Step 4: Once it is selected, click on the “Install Now” button.

It will take you to a new window and it automatically unzips the files and installs it. Once it is successfully done, the “Activate Plugin” button will appear.

Step 5: You can click on the button and activate it right away or you can go back to the plugins page and activate it from there.

Note: I have installed the same plugin in both the scenarios, but in the first way when I searched the plugin and installed it, it was the free version of the plugin, and in the second one I have installed the premium version of the same plugin. But when you look at the installed plugins page you will see the name on both the version is a little different. So, don’t get confused.

2. Install a WordPress plugin via FTP:

This is an extreme measure meant for emergencies only.

I don’t think anyone would prefer this technique over the first two explained above. But knowing this technique might come handy someday.

Besides, using FTP can make you feel a bit more confident; it certainly makes me feel a bit more techie than I am.

So, without further ado let’s get you straight to the steps.

For this technique we are gonna need:

  1. FTP username, password and the host server name (URL or the IP address of the server, where your website is hosted).
  2. One FTP client (I will be using FileZilla).
  3. High-speed Internet connection, if your files are heavy in size.

Step 1: Log in to your server using the FTP client with your username, password, and the host server name. In some cases, you might gonna need the FTP port number as well and the default port number for FTP is always 21.

With FileZilla you don’t need to put any port number, just type in the other details right and click on “Quick Connect”.

Step 2: Once you are logged in, you will see on the left side the files and folders you have on your computer and on the right side you will have the files and folders available on the server.

This is what you will be doing on the left side:

On top left section (as seen in the screenshot) navigate to the folder where you have the plugin you want to install; if it is a zip file then extract it before doing anything else.

A zip file might take too much time if you try to extract on the server once uploaded. So, have them extracted before you try to upload.

Now, once you have found the plugin folder, click on it, now below that section (as seen in the screenshot) you should be seeing the files or folders inside that folder.

This is what you need to do on the right-hand side:

On the right-top side (refer to the screenshot above) navigate to /public_html/yourdomain.com/wp-content/plugins

Below that section, you must now the already installed plugin’s folders.

Now, come back to the left side and Right-Click on the plugin folder (in my case it is “facebook-messenger”) and select upload.

The transfer should start now and at the bottom of the application, you should see the progress bar.

Step 3: Once the uploading is complete, the uploaded plugin folder would now show up along with the other folders on the server.

Good News! If you’ve done everything so far as instructed and you’re seeing the plugin folder on the right-side then, that’s it, chances are high that you have successfully installed the plugin.

Just to confirm that follow the next step.

Step 4: Exit the FTP client and open your browser and log in to your WordPress dashboard and navigate to the installed plugins page.

If you can see the plugin that you have just installed via FTP then you are good to go. Go ahead and activate it.

Final Words:

Installing a theme or plugin follows almost the same processes as mentioned above. But still, for the very beginners, it might be helpful if I have a separate post on how to install a theme in WordPress.

So, if you are an extreme beginner; you can read the post here >> A Beginner’s Guide – How to install a theme in WordPress.

And for those who have understood properly “how to install a plugin” can go ahead and try to install a theme, it will be a good experience for you.

Note: Install a coming soon plugin like coming soon cc and do all the experiments in the background before making the blog public.

P.S. If you have found the post helpful, please share it with your friends and family who you believe would benefit from this.

And if you have any query or suggestions please put it in the comment section below and I will surely get back to you asap.

You have installed your WordPress blog, you have launched your blog, and have published awesome content on it, then the only thing left to do now is reaching out to your audience and get them to subscribe to your blog.

And to help you out with that, today I will share one currently trending technique to get you the very first subscribers.

I am talking about Push Notifications.

Nowadays, most websites and eCommerce sites are using this technique and even Facebook is also using this technique to get their users to come back again and again.

So…

What are (Browser) Push Notifications?

Ever noticed you’re doing something on your computer and suddenly a few pop-ups appeared from nowhere?

Then you read the title it made you curious, so you clicked on the popup and a new tab in your browser opened up and you were taken straight to the article or offers.

You probably liked the article so you kept on reading, or found the offers exciting so brought something.

Once you are done with it, you closed the browser and got back to whatever you were doing earlier.

Now, I want you to stop for a moment and think;

Don’t you wonder how did you end up reading or buying something you were not even looking for at that moment?

If you’re a blogger would you mind your readers do the exact same thing on your blog?

Won’t you love to get some free traffics like these?

Well, that’s what push notification does for you.

But How?

Still, wondering how they did this?

To figure that out you will have to go back in time and again visit the site you just visited.

OR

If you are using Google Chrome then just go to chrome://settings/content/notifications and remove the website from Allow.

Now go to that website again. For this example, I will go to >> www.finalcialexpress.com

Do you see a box popped out in the left top corner?

Well, that is where you have allowed the website to send you browser push notifications.

As the name suggests it is a notification that you push to your readers whenever you want to notify them about something. It could be a new post update, new offers if you sell something on your site or anything.

The best thing about Push notifications is that your readers don’t have to come to your blog to see the notifications if they have already given you permission.

You can outreach your web visitors through web push notifications even if their browser isn’t open.

That makes the push notification a powerful tool for keeping your web audience engaged and to re-engage with your old ones.

So, How do you set up the web push notifications?

Well, the good news is, today I am here to show you exactly that.

I will be using a tool called PushCrew.

So, let’s dive in then…

How to Setup Push Notifications With PushCrew?

You can setup PushCrew in two ways:

No.1: You can use the PushCrew plugin if you are using WordPress.

No.2: You can add the javascript code provided by PushCrew to your blog.

Okay, let’s start with the easy one.

First thing first…

Go ahead and sign up for a free PushCrew account.

Pushcrew comes with a 14 Day Free Trial. You can later opt-in for the premium plans they have or you can still use the free version to collect subscribers for up to 500 numbers.

The only disadvantage is that, after the 14 days, you won’t be able to send any custom notifications. Only notifications you will be able to send are the new post updates.

Set up Push Notifications With PushCrew using the WordPress Plugin:

Step 1: Download the PushCrew WordPress plugin, install and activate it.

Step 2: Log in to your PushCrew account:

Step 3:  Find the PushCrew Account ID:

Once you’re inside the PushCrew dashboard. Go to “Account Settings” under Settings.

Now on the right side, you should see your PushCrew account ID.

Company Name would be fetched automatically as you’ve already submitted it while registering for an account.

So, just set the Timezone and Click on “Save”.

Now, copy the Account ID and head back to your WP dashboard.

You might already be seeing a notification inside the dashboard to enter the PushCrew account ID.

In case you don’t see any such notification then locate the PushCrew tab itself.

You will find it under Settings:

Step 4: It’s time to enter the PushCrew Account ID:

Enter your account ID and save the changes.

Step 5: Log in to your PushCrew account again and navigate to “Customize for Desktop” under Settings.

Here you can upload your logo and also customize the opt-in messages you want to show your readers when they first land on your blog.

In the same way you can set up the mobile opt-in settings as well.

Select the checkbox “Enable Opt-in for mobile“.

Either keep the same message as the desktop’s one or you can go with a different message altogether for mobile; it’s completely up to you.

You can decide where do you want to show the *chicklet.

You can also set a background color for the chicklet matching your theme.

Scrolling down you will see the Child Window Settings.

Child Window appears when a reader clicks on the Allow button.

Click Save and you’re done.

Step 6: The final step to test if all the above steps are set correctly.

To see if your push notification is working or not, just visit your site from a different browser window.

If everything is done properly, you should definitely be seeing a pop-up on your blog like this:

If you’re able to see the pop up on your blog then just pat yourself on the back. Coz, you have just successfully configured Push Notifications on your blog.

Moving on to the other option…

Set up Push Notifications With PushCrew without using the WordPress Plugin:

Here, the first 4 steps will change and the rest will remain the same.

Step 1: Log in to your PushCrew account.

Once you’re inside the PushCrew dashboard you should be directly taken to the Code and Implementation tab.

In case you end up somewhere else just look for the option “Code and Implementation” under settings.

Step 2:  Find the javascript codes:

Inside Code and Implementation there you have the codes; just copy them and move to step 3.

Step 3: While connecting your Google Analytics on your blog you probably have installed a plug in to insert the analytics code.

Here again, you can use the same plugin without installing another one.

And if you haven’t already installed any plugin to insert scripts, then, install a plugin like SOGO Add Script Header Footer.

Now, insert the codes you copied earlier into the header section of the plugin. Hit Save Changes and you are done.

If you’re a complete beginner, I recommend you to go with the 1st option, using the PushCrew Plugin.

When everything is set (either way you like), you can go ahead and check on your mobile and make sure it is working fine there as well.

Now a day most of the traffic on the internet comes from mobile phones only. So you don’t want to miss out on them.

How to send push notifications with PushCrew?

Once you have got few subscribers through Push Notification, now you can set up the push notifications you want to send.

Like I mentioned earlier after the 14 days trial from PushCrew, you won’t be able to send custom notifications to your readers anymore.

But still for your knowledge and also if you decide to upgrade to the premium version, here is how to send push notifications:

Step 1: Login your PushCrew account and find the big green button that says, “Send Push Notifications” and click it.

Step 2: Set up the title, message, and your landing page (where you want the users to land if they click on the notification) and upload a logo:

On the right-hand side, you have the previews, where you can see how the notification will look in different devices.

Below this section you have the advanced settings:

Send to: Inside the dashboard you have an option to create Segment Creator based on the user’s interest, device, OS, etc. So, when you have an update you want to reach some specific readers only, you can use this option.

Advanced Options: Set a timer or your notification will stay there on your reader’s computer or mobile screen forever until the user closes it or followed the link to see what’s inside.

Once everything is set here, just click the Send Notification button below and your notification will be broadcasted to your readers immediately.

Now, that was a custom notification and you won’t be able to use this unless you pay PushCrew.

So, what about sending automatic push notifications to your subscribers as soon as you publish a new post on your blog?

Here’s how to do this:

Step 1: Inside your PushCrew dashboard you will see a tab “RSS-to-push” along with the other menu items.

Click it.

Step 2: Add the RSS feed URL of your blog here.

Then, click Add RSS and you’re all set.

Now, every time you publish a new post on your blog, PushCrew will send a notification directly to your push notification subscribers on their devices.

Final Words:

The main two reasons I can think of why you should implement Push Notifications are:

  1. Fast Delivery.
  2. A sense of security to the users.

Fast Delivery: With the help of push notifications you can reach your audience comparatively faster than any form of marketing as the user doesn’t need to be on your blog or go anywhere to access your new content.

They can be doing anything on their device and you can still reach them within seconds (given, they have access to the internet.)

A sense of security: I personally have experienced this. I have given up on contents just because I had to share my Email ID or Phone number.

Not everyone likes to give away their email ID unless they are convinced they are not making any mistake.

So, with push notifications, you can minimize that risk and people would not mind that much as they can always unsubscribe from the list and they can be sure their information is safe now.

Now that you know how Push Notifications can help you outreach your audience and engage them wherever they are and whatever they are doing.

So, why are you still waiting? set it up already!

Next week I will show you how to do an email opt-in automation using MailChimp like I did on my blog here > Earn to Learn

So, stay tuned and if you haven’t already subscribed to my newsletters, you can do it below.

And I’ll see you next week.

Cheers!

Have any queries? leave it in the comment section and I’ll get back to you asap with an answer.

P.S. If you have found the guide helpful, please share it with your friends and family who you believe might benefit from this.

Installing a theme is so much similar to installing a plugin.

Just like plugins, you can install a theme in three different ways, by search, by upload, and by FTP.

And today, we will learn all of those three techniques.

Let’s start it…

How to install a WordPress theme by search?

When you are just starting up with blogging, chances are high that you won’t go right away for a premium theme. First, you would want to understand the platform, how it works.

So it’s obvious that you will start your blog with a free theme.

The best way to install a free theme is, log in to your WP dashboard and go to > Appearance > Themes>

Here you will see the default themes that are already installed. It’s highly likely that you are not going to use any of the defaults; so, first, delete* all the default themes.

*Note: you cannot delete the theme that is currently active on your blog; so, first find a new theme and then come back here and delete the default.

Here are the steps to find and install a theme from the WP Dashboard.

Step 1: Once you are on the themes page, click on the Add new button on the top left after the title “Themes”.

You can also click on the big plus sign next to the installed themes.

On the next screen, you will see some themes under the featured section; these are the ones that are promoted by WordPress. On the right to it, you will have the options to filter out the latest themes, the most popular ones, your favourite ones and then the advance filtration option to filter out the themes as per your requirement.

The latest and the popular sections are easy to understand; it simply shows you the latest themes that are added and the most popular ones.

The favourite section simply allows you to see the themes that you have favourited while browsing through themes at wordpress.org.

To take advantage of this feature, you will have to use wordpress.org as you cannot favourite a theme from inside the WP dashboard.

You will first have to create an account at wordpress.org.

Go to >wordpress.org, create a new account, confirm your email id and you are good to go.

Now you can browse through all the themes available at wordpress.org and you can favourite the ones that you like and would want to refer back later, before finalizing the theme for your blog.

Note: You have this feature for plugins as well; I forgot to mention that in my last post “How to install a plugin in WordPress?” The feature works exactly the same for both. So, next time when you read about some plugins or themes that you would want to try, just make a search in wordpress.org (given it is not a third-party plugin or theme) keep it favourited and you can always come back later to test it for yourself.

To see the themes that you have favourited, navigate to Appearance>Themes>Add new> Favorites and type in your user name and click on the button that says “Get Favorites”; it will list down all the themes that you have loved so far.

Next, you have the Feature Filter section; here you have the advanced options to narrow down your choices.

Simply select what type of layout you want, what features you want and select the subject of your blog and click on “Apply Filters”; it will list down all the themes that have those features you have just checked off.

Finally, if you have already researched and decided your theme, then just type in the name of it in the search box to the right side on the filter bar.

Step 2:  Navigate to the theme you want to install. When you hover over the theme thumbnail the “Install” and “Preview” buttons will appear.

Click on “Install”

Step 3: Now, once the installation is finished, the “Install” button will turn into “Activate” and the “Preview” button will change to “Live Preview”.

You can activate or have a live preview of your blog from by clicking the respective buttons or you can go back to the installed themes page and activate the theme from there.

That’s it! go ahead and customize your blog the way you want.

How to install a WordPress theme by upload?

This option will be useful when you want to install a premium theme or a theme that you have downloaded from wordpress.org or some third party websites.

Here’s how to do this:

Step 1:

Go to > Appearance > Themes> Add New

This time, instead of searching for a theme you will click on the “Upload Theme” button seen next to “Add Themes” on the left-top of the page.

Step 2:

A new section will appear above the filter-bar.

Click on “Choose File” and locate the theme’s zip folder on your computer.

Step 3:

Once you have selected the right zip folder, click on the “Install Now” button.

Step 4:

As soon as you click on the install now button it will take you to a new window and the installation process will startup.

Once the installation is completed successfully, an Activation link will appear along with two other links.

Just click on the “Activate” link and the theme should be activated on your blog instantly.

Or you can alternatively click on the link that says “Return to Themes Page” and from there, you can activate the theme as well.

Now, you can proceed with the customization.

Finally…

How to install a WordPress theme by using an FTP?

In my experience, users of FTP is very rare; most people won’t go for FTP unless there’s an issue with the WordPress Dashboard if it is not allowing you to use the above-explained ways for some reason.

Anyways, situations might come and you might be left with the only option is to use an FTP to install your theme. So, this section is dedicated to such unfortunate situations. 😉

 Step 1:

Login to the FTP Client (I am using FileZilla here) using the FTP user ID and password you created yourself or got from the server administrator.

Step 2:

Once connected to the server, go ahead and locate the theme folder on your computer.

And on the server-side, go to /public_html/yourdomain.com/wp-content/themes

Step 3:

Once the theme files are located make sure the files are not in .zip format, if they are, first extract them and locate the right theme folder and right-click on it and then click on upload.

The transfer should start now. look at the Server/Local file section found below the FTP client.

Step 5:

Once the transfer is finished, you can close the FTP and head back to the WP dashboard.

Navigate to >Appearance >Themes;

If everything so far has been done accurately then you should be seeing the newly installed theme inside the themes page.

Congratulations! You have just installed your first theme through FTP; go ahead and give yourself a treat, you deserved it.

Final Words:

That’s it!

Now you know how to install a plugin or a theme on WordPress with all the available ways; so, go ahead and experiment it for yourself.
