Choose the wrong niche and you are already out of the game. You will end up wasting so much of your time for nothing.

Choosing the right niche is undeniably the most important factor for a blog to be successful.

How do you choose a niche for blogging?

There are mainly three important factors that need to be taken into consideration while choosing a blog niche.

Ask yourself…

1. What is it that I am passionate about?

Like I say,

Passion can be developed.

So, you don’t really need to have a passion right away when you decide to start a blog.

But having said that, you must have to have at least a goal that drives you to do what’s needed. A goal will always keep you on track.

When I was planning to start this blog, the only two topics I could come up with are either online marketing or tech support.

Those are basically the profiles I have worked in, and I sure have some expertise in those.

I eventually went with blogging and online marketing coz those are the subjects I am good at right now and as I plan to stick with them forever, my scopes of finding topics to write will be high.

But, when I initially started my journey in this field I didn’t have any idea about them at all; yet they seemed so fascinating that I knew right away “this is what I want to do, forever”.

But for the writing part, I am not so sure if I can keep doing it forever; the only thing that makes me get up in the morning and write is the lifestyle I want to have someday.

Like they say,

Even the worst writer could get better by practicing

and I am still a terrible writer… 🙂

Here’s one truth…

I am already fed up with the 9 to 5 job and I certainly know I cannot do it forever. And if you are following this blog from my first post then you would know I have listed “quitting my day job” as one of the to-do-tasks in my big plan.

I literally have no idea how I am doing it for the last 5 years and I don’t know how everyone else is doing it for like, forever; but I can’t anymore.

“I want to break that pattern and live the life I really want, where I can work anytime I want and anywhere I want from.”— And that’s the only thing that is driving me to keep doing what I am doing.

So, besides being passionate about some topic, subject or niche, you need to be passionate about a goal like the one I have; which will keep you motivated and strong in your journey.

Just pick a topic you feel you are good at; even if you are not sure if that’s something you are passionate about, and deliberately practice to make content around it every day.

Make it an unbreakable habit and you won’t even realize when it became your passion.

— but be sure that, you have interest, knowledge, and experience in the topic that you have picked up, otherwise you will end up getting frustrated for not being able to create anything around it.

I am not talking about some expert level of knowledge or experience; just the basic to start off.

I believe, if you are desperate to achieve your ultimate goal then anything you do to get there, you will do it with passion.

If you look back in history, you will find many stories that started with a big goal in mind and with desperation to achieve that goal, all the things in between got into the right places and those became success stories.

Take Chris Gardener’s story for an example.

Gardner knew nothing about the stocks business, but he was determined to do whatever it takes to achieve his goal.

Gardner did not know if he is passionate about stocks when he got into it and yet he ends up forming his own multi-billion brokerage firm.

… in his words “If Chris Gardner can do it, so can you.”

Remember, we humans are made in such a way that if we put our mind to something we can achieve it.

Just have some faith in yourself and have a clear picture of the outcome you want from your work, you can achieve anything you want.

with that thought, let’s move on to the next thing that you need to do once you have picked up a niche,

Find out…

2. Will this niche makes me “profits”?

If blogging about some topic is a hobby for you and you make more than enough money at your job already and you are happy there, you don’t have to worry about this step.

But, just be honest, if you are like me who wants to quit his day job and still want to make enough money to run his household and pay the bills through blogging, then you will have to make sure that the niche you have chosen actually has that potential.

If the niche you have picked or the niche you are already passionate about is a hot topic, known to make big profits, then you, my friend is one lucky person.

But if the niche you decided to blog about is not known to make money then you might end up wasting your time for no reason.

So, make sure up front that you are investing your time and effort in the right niche.

Here are few ways to figure out if your niche can make you money:

  • Use Google Keyword Planner to find out how often people search for something in your niche.
  • Use Google Trends to make sure your niche is in trend for a long time and possibly stay in trend for many more years.
  • Find out if there are any affiliate products or programs available around your niche. Clickbank is a nice place to look for.
  • Do a google search or go to the nearest big library or to the bookstore to find out if there are any books written on your niche. If someone has written a book around it then there’s a strong chance that it is a profitable niche.
  • Last but not least, try to find out if any bloggers out there making money in your niche. Nowadays most bloggers share their own blog’s case studies, so find them and read them.

Once you are sure your niche has enough potential to make you millions, if not billions then the only thing left to ask yourself…

3. Am I ready to make the commitment?

Let’s say, you have found the niche that you are passionate about or at least you know you like it and it has the potential to make good money, does it mean, now you will start a blog and it will be a big success?

Yes, it may be, only if your goal is to just start a blog.

But if you want to build a strong readership through your writing, help your audience to solve a problem they need help with and want to make enough money to pay your bills then, there’s one thing you need to have very badly is a commitment, to yourself and to your audience.

You have to make sure that you create valuable content and with consistency.

You should post regularly and fix a day if possible. I publish a post every Thursday.

If you have made a promise to your audience then keep it no matter what; of course, there could be circumstances beyond your control, so if, such time comes just be open to your audience and tell them why you could not continue. You’ll be surprised to see how understanding they are.

Now, how will you create valuable content?

Of course, your knowledge and experience will come handy here. If you don’t have enough of them yet, then first find a way to gain them; if needed put a pause to your plan to start a blog.

I have worked in the online marketing industry for more than two years to finally have the confidence to start working on my dream project, which I call “Honingbird.com”.

So, just choosing the right niche is not enough, you will have to keep exploring that niche and the possibilities in it to come up with ideas to create content around it.

Finally, if you believe you are ready to make the commitment, then only jump in or else take your time and learn as much as you can until you find the confidence.

Remember, at the end of the day you want to write for your readers, not for yourself; so make sure you have put 100% to it.

Final Words

If you have found your niche, that you are passionate about, that has profit potential and you are ready to make the commitment… then go on, why wait anymore, just kick start your dream project already.

But if you are still a bit low in confidence and not sure about your passion then,

Here’s one suggestion, for now, just be passionate about your goal (what do you want to achieve through blogging?) and pick something from the list of the things you like to do and keep on doing it.

And when you feel stuck or bored with that thing, leave it and move on to the next thing on your list and just keep on repeating it until you find something that you feel neither stuck nor bored in.

That’s the only way you can figure out your passion.

Of course, it’s time-consuming; I have done that for 3 years before I had finally stumbled upon online marketing. I have worked in many different industries and in many different job profiles before that.

If you are wondering “how someone can work in many different profiles in just 3 years??” then you should know the shortest period I have worked with a company is one and a half days.

Now you guess how many jobs one can do in 3 years… 🙂

I know that sounds a bit silly, but here’s my philosophy behind this…

I believe we should not take life too seriously. In fact, life is not meant to be taken seriously. We all are gonna die someday, so I don’t see any reason in being stuck in a job I don’t like and be miserable about it for the rest of my life. Life is meant to be enjoyed; then why not just do that?

With that thought, let’s say bye for now and I will see you soon.

Have an awesome weekend!
